Hi, I'm in search of the teddy bear below and I ran across this forum so I figure I'll give it a shot!
Looking for a teddy bear like the one pictured below, except not all scruffed up. I've had this thing since like 1990 and my sister loves this little bear to death. Now it's all beat, worn, and about to fall apart and I'd like to find a replacement.
He's supposed to be more fuzzy and furry but over the years, he's looking like this, even after a wash. He's got a red bow tie. His nose is supposed to have a dark brown leathery covering on it. You can see some of it on the edge of the nose. It has worn off and now it has a light brown plastic nose. He's got a little stubby tail on the back, like a dirty cotton ball. And he's got the leathery feet pads sewn on the bottom of his feet.
I remember seeing it sold in Mervins or Montgomery Ward back in the early 90's. I don't know the maker or the name of the bear because the tags are gone. But any info on that too is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

m_dudey I found this bear but he does not look 100% like your bear. He does have brown safety nose that have a triangular shape.
He was made by a Japanese manufacturer and they describe his tail as stubby brown plush tail that protrudes from a hole at the back of his trousers.
The swing tag translates to" Merry go Round"

His nose would have been "flocked". A slightly fuzzy synthetic material over hard plastic that often wears off.
Could be Gund, or Commonwealth, and if made in the 90's probably made in China or possibly Korea for one of those USA companies. His fur is sort of like dralon, rather than the more modern plush, which mats somewhat.
After washing you can bring the nap up a bit by rubbing a stiff plastic brush or comb with dull edges over the fur.
The leatherette material on his pads I've had before on older bears too, but the maker isn't coming to me....sorry, don't know if any of this helps!

I've found him! I posted locally in a wanted ad on craigslist and someone responded with the exact same bear! I just picked him up tonight for $30! She was a very nice lady and we chatted for like half an hour when I went to get him.
He's in new condition and has its tags on still! He's made by Playful Pals, made expressly for Mervyn's. And Mandy, you're right, he's made in Korea.
I'll post a picture soon. He sure looks a lot different than the one I've had!

He's a cutie. We hope you kept the old one. He's so precious. We have one for over twenty years and he looks just like your little bear.
All scruffy and well loved. He travels with us everywhere. Those tiny bears have a lot of stories and adventures to share!
They are distant cousins after all.
Please say you kept him...

Dear M-Dudey.
I wanted to let you know that this bear you are searching of is yes indeed from mervyn's and it was around 1987 when it did. my mother worked at one and bought it for me when i was 6 months old. my teddy has a worn out leather dark brownish plastic shower except the edges. leather padded feet paws, and a cotton ball brown type tail. unfortunately the red bow is no longer. the tag is still on and perfect condition go figure that.manufacture Playful Pals made expressly for mervyn's and the other side of the tag says made in Korea all new materials synthetic fibers.
