Does any member here regulary buys teddy bears on E-bay and has anyone found a real gem, like an old Steiff there? Jacques

I just wonder:mad2: whether it must be a real old bear from Steiff or other:ashamed:?????
Is it for investment?
I love "old fashion" bears but the "new" oldies are so cute and one can affort to buy them.
By the way - "new" old style bears can be hugged:D.

:happy2:Thanks for all compliments...........of course, I know that there are many bear makers who make absolutely outstanding bears, but, I do my best:D
Yes - this is one of my "oldies"........I only started this year to make oldstyle bears.
Nevertheless I hold my opinion that bears and their friends manely have to be there for hugging........Nothing against Steiff or others which "survived" since the beginning ....... for my understanding those rare authentic oldies are better stored in museums so that futur generations can be able to see how the teddy-era began.

This one is a cutie. I understand you about the bears are made to be hugged. I made child safe bears out of faux furs and sell at reasonable prices and there are those designer bear makers who look down on my type of bear. To me everyone should be able to buy and love a bear.

I have a few old Steiff bears in my collection and they are most definately my favorite! Bought some on E-bay and LOVE them to bits!
I also love old looking bears by artists and here you can see a lovely bear by Ingrid Schmid on the left that blends in beartifully with the 4 Steiffs, Polish bear and little Herman bear.

I have bought loads of bears on ebay over the years as I love to restore old bears. However it is not always easy to tell the true condition of the bears from often poor photos and I have made mistakes!
The most difficult thing to assess is the mohair coverage - I have seen bears described as having 90 per cent coverage when they obviously have a lot less!
Also you can't tell what condition the backing fabric is in - a tear in a strong bear is no problem but get one that is in a fragile state and it is a nightmare!
I tend to go for bears whose make I recognise or think I recognise - it's great fun waiting for the parcel to arrive and I have been pleasantly surprised more often that I have been disappointed.
I have a modest budget and can't afford to gamble on the more expensive bears. I still don't own an old Steiff though that is my dream!
Unfortunately it is becoming more and more difficult to find bears I want within my price range. Are they getting more expensive or am I just getting more picky?!
One thing I do know is that I need to reduce my collection. I sell some on my website and through my local bear shop in Lyme Regis, but I find it very hard to part with them!
Once I have spent hours lovingly restoring them, I can't bear to let them go.

I love that "old new" bear by Bobbybaer. What's it made of?

Have you found that some sellers purposely fake bears, such as Steiff and sell them on E-bay? Jacques

My old style bears are made from mohair or, lastest ones from old velvet mohair upholstery fabric.
The brown one was from "normal" brown mohair .It takes about 1 day to sew (all by hand) but as much as time to make them old as I want them to have not only an old look but also an old "touch".

Hi, I sell bears regularly on e bay, under artist bears, and all my bears are collectable one of a kind mohair bears or doggies!
Here is one of my latest little doggies that'll soon be available on e bay for adoption!
I find that most artist use e bay as a way to sell bears, and one can find real gems on e bay!

Thanks Elize,
I also make dogs for people working off photo's they send me of their best friends! This is very rewarding!
Hazel, the above doggy will soon be up for adoption on e bay!
Have you ever made a doggy or a kitty cat before?

I must admit that I have never tried to make a doggy or kitty.:ashamed: It looks so much more difficult than to make a bear.

I had never sold on eBay but decided that this week I would try it. This is the bear, which is my latest design, that I put on eBay.

what lovely old teds.... and the deco looks great too!!

i've tried to "win the bid" on several old steiff bears on ebay, but either the end prices were outrageous, or i was just too slow (despite having 2 laptops to bid with simultaneously!!) ... so i just stick to looking for them on antique markets in the area ... and there are some austrian sites similar to ebay that have a cute old steiff bear on sale every now and then ...

Prices on Steiff bears are very high on Ebay.

At some stage I thought there was someone that was deliberately placing bets on some Steiff bears to get the prices very high. :weird:
