The origin of Gollywogg (Golly for short and sometimes spelled as Golliwogg and Golliwog), as creator, Florence Upton herself said in an interview, "is passing simple.

He was born of no deep, dark intentions, nor was he the product of a decadent craving for ugliness on the part of his creator. He simply walked quietly side by side with me out of my own childhood...Tracing him back to as near the beginning as I can get, he came from an American Fair. Farther we cannot go, and must fall back on the Topsy theory - 'he growed'."

I really like the Golliwogs...they are so simple and primitive. They are just what they are and so loving!
The closest thing to a Golli I have made is a "raggedy ann" type with lots of tiny braids all over her head. She was very popular! I made so many of them I had to just quit...

lovenshire, you do have a cute golly, love her hair.

I just love my Gollies - they are so unpretentious.

I will never forget the first Golly I made for my son. We had to go to the organic market and he decide Golly must go with. People could not stop staring at this little boy with this Golly. :rolleye2:

Here is a picture of my son with his Gollies. The one that went to the market with is the black one with the red jacket. :rolleye2:

I don't think most people understand about the Gollies. They are so loveable!

A teddy bear collection without a Golly is not a collection for me. :rolleye2:

The easiest Golly to make is a little felt Golly. This little Golly was made from 1 piece that was cut twice (front & back). I sewed him him up, stuffed him and made a little felt jacket. It takes about an hour or so to make. He is 10cm tall and I gave him some black "mohair"

Every collection must have a Golly.
